I’ve been doing some portraiture that uses artificial directed light, from flashes and strobes. In contrast, the parade and events of May 7 will be outside, in an undirected uncontrolled environment. How can I make this space into my studio? I would work with Mark and Razan to form a “travelling studio” where we would isolate people out of the crowd and make them into studio models through high shutter speeds and lights. We would carry everything to quickly move from person to person, forming individual portraiture but using lighting to determine scene and subject. Photographer Eric Schwabel’s “Porbable Light Suit” that he used to make portraits at Burning Man festivals inspired me. By using powerful lights in the stark desert he can overpower the sun and make contrasty images in midday.
