Toute la Memoire du Monde

You wonder whether this film would be set in a library today. Or whether it would be online. For what is this website if not an attempt to document and archive the experiences of the class. Or would it be about the book of life: the library of genes and DNA being catalogued by biologists. This film reminded me of a short story by Jorge Luis Borges called the “Library of Babel.” The impossibility of the task of building and cataloguing a library of the universe leaves the librarians nearly suicidal. We are always fighting against entropy, disorder and decay, which is to say we are fighting against the inevitability of death and forgetting. Something is always left out. And as the narrator observes in the film, ‘who can say what is most precious’? Or what is left out? The archivist has power.
